Baltibrew's 2013 Big Brew participation will take place at Nepenthe this Saturday, May the 4th. Further details on the event can be found on the facebook event created by Nepenthe.

The long and short is that some of our members and a few of Brewtherville Labs' members will be brewing in Nepenthe's parking lot starting at 10 a.m.

If you're interested in brewing at the event, contact us to get coordinated.

Those of you who've already committed to brewing, please get your recipes to the folks at Nepenthe asap.

Don't drive angry Tomorrow is Groundhog Day, and Baltibrew will meet at Jon Blair's house to brew several beers (Chocolate Milk Stout, Ned Rye-erson IPA, and an Mexican-American Lager).

Mike Pietropaoli will be doing the Rye-PA Brew-In-A-Bag style. If you're unfamiliar with that unique process, this would be a great opportunity to learn all about it.

Jon has also invited members to bring their own rigs, and brew alongside him.

As usual, bring food and beer to share. Brew day starts at 10 a.m. sharp.

AHA Conference

AHA Philly Conference (a.k.a. the National Homebrewer's Conference, June 27–29) tickets go on sale Tuesday afternoon (February 5th), and hotel bookings begin that morning. To register, you must be an AHA member. Sign up if you haven't already, and intend to purchase tickets.

Much like our own Guild Holiday Party, this will sell out incredibly fast. Baltibrew, and many other Maryland clubs plan to attend the event. Philly is reputedly woefully under-represented on the homebrew front; the Free State intends to take up their slack.

We will send out a reminder prior to opening of sales to buy your tickets, but we'd very much like to have an idea who from Baltibrew plans to go so we can organize rideshares, hotel roommates, etc. Sound off in the comment thread of this post if you're planning to go, please.

Barley Legal III

Last but not least…

In conjunction with Wootown, Baltibrew has agreed to participate as co-organizers of the Barley Legal homebrew competition to be held March 23rd. More details on that to come, but keep it in mind for your brew scheduling.

Jason was on the scene again taking pictures during the great (albeit a bit chilly) group brew with the Wootown members up at the Snyder Apiary.  We brewed mead, a braggot (all-grain), as well as a modified Sierra Nevada Celebration clone (extract w/ grain additions).

Hey Baltibrewers! Tomorrow, 10 am, at Snyder's Apiaries in White Hall, Maryland we'll be taking part in Wootown's annual mead mazing.

Bring a covered side dish, and beer or some other libation to share. If you'd like to take home must, bring cash and a clean fermenter and airlock. Honey is $3.50 per pound. Wootown will have a variety of wine yeasts available for purchase, but you can pitch any yeast you happen to have as well.

For the uninitiated, this is always a cool event. It's a beautiful location out in the country, and it's a great chance to mingle with one of our compatriot clubs. Weather is forecast to be cool, and partly cloudy so dress accordingly.

Some of us will be collectively brewing an un-hopped braggot — a beer/mead hybrid. Feel free to bring your own equipment if you want to brew yourselves, but remember that a 10 am start makes for a late finish. Extract may be preferable to all-grain.

We're brewing two different beers today at member Ian McDonald's house which is at 312 E. Belvedere Avenue.

These beers are in preparation for our Guild Holiday Party theme. Expect chocolate and caramel.

Hope to see you there.

Last night we had a small meeting but were able to accomplish quite a bit. However, we need everyone's feedback on the September Brew to be able to move forward.

Let's assume we are going with the Willy Wonka theme, everyone seems to like that idea and is on board. Our next brew will focus on making beer for the Christmas Party, centered around this theme. The idea is to have 3-4 recipes going at once at the next brew (smaller batches of course) and have them each be chocolate based. Each recipe would do something different with the chocolate/willy-wonka theme. Some of the ideas we threw around were Chocolate-Orange, A Salty Chocolate Gose, a Chocolate Cherry and a lighter Chocolate (white chocolate?) beer that is dyed Purple.

Everyone can submit recipes in the comments below and then we can all vote on them. The top 3 will be the brewmasters for that beer (or will at least be in charge of delegating the brew to someone else). On brew day we will split up into teams for each recipe.

Besides the chocolate based recipes, we thought it would also be interesting to have one more experimental recipe that would be the" Oompa Loompa beer". This could be more bizarre than the others, so feel free to submit your ideas for that as well.

Here are the current  September Brew Details.

When: Sat. 9/22/2012
Where: Ian's Place
What: 3 Chocolate Based Beers
1 Experimental Oompa Loompa beer

Submit recipes and general comments below. We should decide on the recipe's within the next two weeks, so get them in ASAP so we can start the voting process.

Hope everyone had a good time saturday and those who took home wort are happily bubbling away.  Here some pics from the days festivities.

This Saturday July 14th, baltibrewers will unite at John Jesters House to brew up a rather large batch of what we're calling BALTIBREW de GARDE.  Below are some important details:

  • This is a BYOFood event, so please add in the comments what you plan to contribute to the bounty (there will be a grill available).
  • It's also rec'd to bring homebrew/beer to share (preferably some different bier de garde's to try)
  • People bringing home wort (see below), please bring your clean bucket, lid, and air lock.
  • Although the focus will be on brewing, there is a pool to dip into, so bring your suit and towel.
