UPDATE: here are some more pics from Sandy over at www.beerinbaltimore.blogspot.com (starting at the church picture)

Baltibrew is sponsoring a no hop gruit competition at Liam Flynn's Ale House to start off baltimore beer week on october 20th.  Entries can be submitted as late as one hour before the event.

Details:

Happy pre-Thanksgiving, Baltibrewers!

Lots to discuss:

  1. This Saturday (11/26) we're returning to Josh Rosen's house to keg our Guild Holiday Party beer. This is also a great time to finalize menu for our club hour and get things planned and sorted before we have to make the push to prep for the party.
  2. This Sunday (11/27) a fellow club on the Eastern Shore (OCMHB) is holding their East vs. West competition in Berlin, MD. They still need judges and stewards, have about 67 entries, and will be putting up BJCP certified judges at a hotel for free. Details on their competition site.
  3. A week from this Thursday (12/1) we will be meeting at Greg Slack's house to prepare for Saturday's Guild Holiday Party. More details on that to come.
  4. And last but not least by any means, Guild Holiday Party is on Saturday Dec. 3rd. You already know if you're going, because tickets are sold out!

Hope you're having a great run-up to the holidays, and hope you get to drink some great beers with your Thanksgiving meal.

Baltibrewers,

Our October meeting is tomorrow, Thursday, October 13 at Alewife Baltimore.  The starting time is 8:00 p.m. and we have a full agenda:

  • Theme for club hour at the Guild holiday party.
  • What beer to brew for club hour
  • When & where to brew this beer
  • Guild party itself
  • Upcoming comps & events
  • Baltibrew club T-shirts (bring your money!)

Also as a part of BBW events, pints are $5 at Alewwife tomorrow.

See you tomorrow night.

Jester

--------------------Brewing for the Cure! Women's Homebrew Contest -- Sunday October 9th---------------

A homebrew competition for women only!
This contest has a fall theme, so you might consider an Oktoberfest, a Marzen, an Alt, a Pumpkin ale, something with maple ....  Whatever tastes like fall to you. But choose well, because each brewer may only enter one beer.
Entries may be bottled or kegged, but you have to bring at least a gallon. (That's eleven 12 ounce bottles, if you're wondering.)
The store will open at noon, but women involved in the competition can come to get set up at 11am (and must be set up before noon). Entry to the event costs $5.
Judging starts at noon and will go on until about 3. Prizes go to the best beer in each of these two categories.
  • Best interpretation of fall/presentation (1st place only)
  • People's choice award (1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners)
The lucky first place winners will get picked up in the flying Dog Winnebago with a group of her friends for a private tour and talk with Flying dog brewers. She'll also get an MDHB gift certificate. Other prizes will consist of care package from MDHB and Flying dog.
To register, please send an email to events@mdhb.com. Include your name, phone number and email address.
To judge Peoples Choice, just show up at MDHB with your $5 donation!

----------------Little Havana Homebrewing Showcase-------------------
Wednesday October 12th. Homebrewers can arrive at 5PM, set up and then try all of the beers before it opens up to the public at 6PM and will probably run until 9PM (including prizes, etc.). Little Havana has expanded in the back, so we have a lot more room this year.  It will be a fundraiser for BARCS again, but this time, we will be charging a whopping $5 donation (brewers don't pay of course). The band, K.O.E. will be rocking out again too. To participate, contact Judy Neff, judyeasterbrook@hotmail.com.  Brewers need to bring 5 gallons (keg or bottle) plus a way to serve (gas, picnic tap for kegs), but everything else will be there.

------------------Barley Legal 2: Better in the Dark----------------------
Entries are being accepted at several drop-off locations listed on their web site or may be sent to the address listed on our web site. In order to increase the value to those who enter, each beer will be eligible to win twice in two separate sets of judging:
-          A BJCP-style judging session, based upon aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel, and overall impression
-          A second, thematic, hedonistic judging session for beers that are 17 SRM or darker
So if your Black IPA, Wheatwine, or Gruit doesn’t take home a BJCP prize, you could still win in the second session, or even both. The entry fee is $6 for the first entry, and $5 for each additional. Entries are accepted between September 24 and October 8, 2011.
This year, judging for Barley Legal will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. in Abingdon, MD at the DuClaw Brewing Company brewery. Judging is right at the end of Baltimore Beer Week, and a great way to end what will be great exposure to craft and homebrew in Maryland.
If you are new to judging, stewarding, or volunteering, this is a great opportunity for you to learn more about the process and earn points. If you are a seasoned pro, Barley Legal promises to provide a great time. There will Harvest and Halloween food provided, an after judging event at the DuClaw restaurant in Abingdon, and prizes available for those who attend the judging session.
If you are a homebrewer, and would like to enter your beer, mead, cider or perry, please visit our web site at http://www.wootown.org/comp for more details.

Hey, BaltiBrewers.

Hopefully either you've already filled out an entry form for the ChiliBrew (v3.0) this upcoming Sunday, or you're going to do so immediately upon reading the rest of this...

In case you've somehow been completely out of the loop 'til now, I'm talking about this event: http://bmorecharmin.intuitwebsites.com/

You will read that site's About section and realize why you will have an awesome time at ChiliBrew.
You will read the Rules section and understand what you must do to compete.
You will go to the Compete section and fill out an entry form to bring mucho booze.
You will email bmorecharmin@gmail.com with any questions.
You will show up with us in Hampden at noon Sunday and rock that $#!*.

That is all.

GO NOW AND BEER BE WITH YOU.

Well folks, the effort we put into making that Ginger Snap Cookie ale a couple months ago has paid off. We got together as a club after the Baltimore Washington Monument Holiday Lighting at co-founder Paul Capestany's excellent home this past Thursday to taste the versions of the beer, and decided upon the slightly less attenuated version fermented at co-founder Kevin Berry's house.

At last night's Free State Homebrewer's Guild Holiday Party, we took first place in the annual hedonistic homebrew competition!!!

For a very young club, in its first year as a guild member this is a big deal, and some of you helped make it possible. We'd LOVE to have more of you involved next year.

The guild represents the collective interests of all of the associated homebrew clubs all over the state of Maryland. As members of the guild our members receive a 10% discount at the two better homebrew shops in the state — Thirsty Brewer, and MDHB — and the club is eligible to take part in a number of guild events. There's an annual picnic at Patapsco State Park in the summer, the Zymurnauts Crab Feast in September, Mashout — a camping trip to Western Maryland with campsite brewing — in August, and most spectacularly, the annual holiday party held within the Clipper City Brewery.

The holiday party involves support of a variety of charities through donations and fund raising events held during the festivities — a raffle, silent auction, and the hedonistic homebrew competition. This competition involves a different style of judging from most homebrew contests. Instead of judging to style, those attending the event submit a single vote for their favorite beer served at the party. BaltiBrew's Ginger Snap Cookie won by a margin of three votes over about 25 other beers. No small feat for a club that barely boasts 10 members.

Kevin, Ryan D, Paul, and I collectively believed that our beer was a winner, and we know that our triumph makes a big splash in the eyes of the guild. Remember, this competition lets the rest of the clubs — and more importantly US — know that OUR beer was the favorite at a party full of beer afficionados.

For our efforts, we won a box of holiday themed beers hand-selected by Guild President, Les White — some from his personal collection. So here's where you come in:

When should we hold a meeting to taste our winnings?

  • Thursday, 12/17 (100%, 2 Votes)
  • Wenesday, 12/16 (0%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 2
